What do extras cost in Birmingham?

Extras added to a Birmingham carpet clean cost from £4 for an anti allergen treatment to £57 for a full sofa clean. Adding them to the same visit saves paying a second call out.

Carpet Cleaning Cost in Birmingham

What pushes up the price of carpet cleaning in Birmingham?

Five things move a Birmingham carpet cleaning price the most: the Clean Air Zone, access to city centre flats, the type of home, carpet condition, and minimum charges and VAT.

The Clean Air Zone

Birmingham's Clean Air Zone covers everything inside the A4540 Middleway ring road, including the city centre, the Jewellery Quarter and Digbeth. A cleaner driving a van that does not meet the emissions standard pays £8 for every day they drive in the zone. Most cleaners run compliant vans and pay nothing, but some add the charge to jobs inside the ring road. Ask before you book if you live in the zone.

City centre apartments and car parks

Cleaners with a van mounted machine run hoses from the van to your door, so they need to park close by. Many city centre apartment blocks only have underground car parks with height barriers that a large van cannot pass. In those buildings, cleaners often bring a portable machine instead, or charge extra for carrying equipment through lifts and corridors.

The type of home you live in

Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Moseley, Kings Heath and Handsworth often have front and back rooms knocked into one long lounge. Interwar semis across Hall Green, Erdington and Kingstanding usually have a full staircase, a landing and three bedrooms, which puts them in the £99 to £145 band. Larger homes in Edgbaston, Harborne and Sutton Coldfield are more likely to have wool carpets, which take longer to clean and dry.

Carpet condition

Heavy soiling and pet stains add about 60% to the price. A three bedroom house with stairs rises from £99 to £145 for average carpets to £157 to £232 for heavily soiled carpets, because of the extra pre treatment and machine passes.

Minimum charges and VAT

Nearly every Birmingham carpet cleaner sets a minimum charge per visit to cover travel and set up, so a single room at £23 to £34 will often be charged at the minimum instead. Cleaners registered for VAT also add 20% to their prices, while smaller traders under the £90,000 threshold do not. Check whether both quotes include VAT before you compare them.

From the trade: InstantCost was founded by a former carpet cleaner, and one thing catches people out in apartment blocks every time. If the van can't get near the door, the cleaner either switches to a smaller portable machine or adds a charge for the extra carrying. Neither is wrong, but ask which one you're getting, because a portable machine won't pull out as much deep dirt as a van mounted one.

Standard clean or deep steam clean: which should you book?

A deep steam clean costs about 50% more than a standard clean in Birmingham. For a three bedroom house with stairs, that's £148 to £218 instead of £99 to £145.

Deep steam cleaning, also called hot water extraction, injects hot water and detergent into the carpet and pulls it straight back out with the loosened dirt. It is the method most carpet makers recommend, and it's worth paying for if your carpets have not been cleaned for a few years, you have pets, or you are moving out of a rental. A standard clean is fine for carpets in good condition that just need a refresh.

Wool carpets and natural fibres like sisal need products and methods made for them, so tell the cleaner what your carpet is made of when you book. Our UK carpet cleaning cost guide explains each method in more detail.

What should a Birmingham carpet cleaning quote include?

A fair quote names every room, the cleaning method and any extras, and gives one total that includes VAT. If a cleaner will only give a price once they arrive, look elsewhere.

Make sure your quote covers:

  • A thorough vacuum before any cleaning starts

  • Pre treatment of walkways and stains

  • The cleaning method, standard or deep steam

  • Which furniture will be moved and which will stay in place

  • Whether the hallway, stairs and landing are included

  • Any minimum charge, Clean Air Zone charge or parking cost

  • The final price, with VAT clearly shown

Already have a quote? For a three bedroom house with stairs, a standard clean should sit around £99 to £145. Check your quote against the Birmingham range before you agree to anything.

How much is end of tenancy carpet cleaning in Birmingham?

End of tenancy carpet cleaning in Birmingham usually costs £148 to £232 for a three bedroom house with stairs. Most tenants book a deep steam clean at £148 to £218, and carpets with heavy soiling or pet stains cost £157 to £232.

Demand peaks every summer when student tenancies end in Selly Oak and around the universities, so book early if you are moving out in June or July.

Does your landlord have to be paid for a professional clean?

No. The Tenant Fees Act 2019 stops landlords and letting agents in England from making tenants pay for a professional clean as a condition of the tenancy. Your landlord can expect the carpets back in the same condition as the check in inventory, allowing for fair wear and tear.

If you leave the carpets dirtier than they were, the landlord can deduct a reasonable cleaning cost from your deposit. General wear in walkways is fair wear and tear. A new stain is not. Keep any cleaning receipt and take dated photos of each room before you hand back the keys.

How long does a carpet take to dry after cleaning?

Most carpets dry in 4 to 8 hours after a deep steam clean. Thick wool carpets and rooms with little air flow can take longer, especially in winter.

To speed things up, open windows when it's dry outside, run a fan, and keep internal doors open so air can move through the house. Keep the heating on low in cold weather rather than shutting everything up, as a damp room left closed overnight can start to smell musty.

How do you stay safe on cleaning day?

  • Damp carpet is slippery, so take extra care on stairs until they are fully dry.

  • Keep pets, babies and young children off the carpet until it has dried.

  • Open windows while the carpet dries, especially if anyone has asthma.

  • Ask what products the cleaner uses if anyone at home has allergies or sensitive skin.

  • Place foil or plastic tabs under furniture legs to stop them marking the damp pile.

  • Watch for hoses running through doorways and up the stairs while the work is going on.

  • Check that the cleaner holds public liability insurance before they start.

How do you choose a carpet cleaner in Birmingham?

Pick a cleaner who gives a fixed written price, tells you which method they use and holds public liability insurance. Membership of the National Carpet Cleaners Association (NCCA) is a good sign that the cleaner is trained and insured.

Ask at least two cleaners to quote for exactly the same rooms, so the prices are easy to compare. Recent reviews that mention stain removal and drying time tell you more than a star rating alone. Be wary of leaflets with very low per room prices, because the total often grows once the cleaner is inside.

Birmingham carpet cleaning questions

How much does it cost to clean one room in Birmingham?

One room costs £23 to £34 on our Midlands regional model. Most cleaners have a minimum charge per visit, so booking a single room may cost more. Adding a second room is often good value.

Do cleaners in Solihull, Sutton Coldfield and West Bromwich charge the same as Birmingham?

Prices across the Midlands sit in the same regional range. Travel distance, parking and access to your home make more difference than which town you live in.

Will the Clean Air Zone add to my bill?

Only if you live inside the A4540 Middleway ring road and the cleaner's van does not meet the emissions standard. In that case, some cleaners add the £8 daily charge. Ask when you book.

Can cleaners work in high rise flats?

Yes. If a van mounted machine can't reach your floor, the cleaner will use a portable machine carried up in the lift. Ask which machine they plan to use when you get your quote.

How often should carpets be professionally cleaned?

Most homes need a professional clean every 12 to 18 months. With pets or young children, every 6 to 12 months keeps carpets in better shape.

Will every stain come out?

Most everyday stains lift completely. Older marks from red wine, tea or dye transfer may only fade, and bleach spots cannot be fixed because the colour has gone from the fibres.
