Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

£7,500 — or £9,000 off gas grid

A fixed grant off the price of a heat pump in England and Wales. No income test. Oil and LPG homes off the gas grid get £9,000 on applications from 21 July 2026.

Free boiler & insulation

Energy suppliers pay for a new boiler, insulation and heating controls if you're on a qualifying benefit — or on a low income, via the LA Flex route. Closes 31 December 2026.

How UK energy grants work

Some grants come straight from government (the Warm Homes Plan and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme). Others are paid for by the largest energy suppliers under an obligation set by Ofgem (ECO4, including the LA Flex route into it).

The funding normally goes to a registered installer rather than into your bank account. The installer deducts it from the cost and tells you whether any balance remains.

Schemes differ across the UK. Scotland runs Home Energy Scotland grants and loans, Wales runs Nest, and Northern Ireland runs the Affordable Warmth Scheme.

Frequently asked questions

Three are open: the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (£7,500 towards a heat pump, or £9,000 for off-gas-grid oil and LPG homes), ECO4 free boilers and insulation for low-income households until 31 December 2026, and the Warm Homes Plan delivered by councils. The Great British Insulation Scheme closed on 31 March 2026.

Often yes. Insulation funded under ECO4 can sit alongside a Boiler Upgrade Scheme heat pump grant, for example. You cannot get two grants for the same measure.

Not always. ECO4 and most Warm Homes support are means-tested, but the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is open to all property owners in England and Wales regardless of income, and the LA Flex route lets your council declare you eligible for ECO4 without benefits.

No. Government energy grants are non-repayable. You may still need to cover any cost above the grant value.

Never pay an upfront fee to 'apply'. Apply through gov.uk or use a TrustMark / MCS registered installer, and check the installer's registration number before signing anything.
