How UK energy grants work

Most UK home energy grants are either funded directly by government (Warm Homes Plan, Boiler Upgrade Scheme) or paid for by the largest energy suppliers under an obligation set by Ofgem (ECO4, Great British Insulation Scheme).

Grants are paid to a registered installer rather than to you, so you never handle the money. The installer applies on your behalf, deducts the grant from your quote, and you only pay any remaining balance.

Schemes differ across the UK. Scotland runs Home Energy Scotland grants and loans, Wales runs Nest, and Northern Ireland runs the Affordable Warmth Scheme.

The main schemes are the Warm Homes Plan, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (up to £7,500 towards a heat pump), the Great British Insulation Scheme and ECO4 (free boilers and insulation for low-income households). Devolved schemes also run in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Often yes. For example insulation funded under the Great British Insulation Scheme can be combined with a Boiler Upgrade Scheme heat pump grant. You cannot usually receive two grants for the exact same measure.

Not always. ECO4 and most Warm Homes support are means-tested, but the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is open to all property owners in England and Wales regardless of income.

No. Government energy grants are non-repayable. You may still need to cover any cost above the grant value.

Never pay an upfront fee to 'apply'. Apply through gov.uk or use a TrustMark / MCS registered installer, and check the installer's registration number before signing anything.
