What the scheme covers

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) runs to 2028 and is administered by Ofgem. It pays a fixed grant towards replacing a fossil fuel heating system with a low-carbon alternative in existing homes and small non-domestic buildings.

With a typical air source heat pump installation costing £10,000–£14,000, the grant usually leaves £3,000–£6,500 to pay. There is no cap on the number of grants issued per year, but funding is allocated first come, first served.

How to apply

  1. Get a valid EPC and clear any outstanding insulation recommendations.
  2. Request quotes from at least three MCS-certified heat pump installers.
  3. Your chosen installer applies to Ofgem for the grant on your behalf.
  4. Ofgem confirms the voucher and the installer deducts £7,500 from your quote.
  5. You pay only the balance once the system is commissioned.
