How much does an electrician cost in the UK?
UK electrician hourly rates in 2026 typically range from £40 to £75. London and the South East sit at £55–£75/hour, with the Midlands, North and Wales closer to £40–£55. Most electricians charge a one-hour minimum plus call-out (£40–£80) for short jobs.
For larger projects like a fuse board upgrade or rewire, electricians usually quote a fixed price including materials, certification and Part P notification to your local Building Control.
All electrical work in dwellings must be carried out by a Part P registered electrician (NICEIC, NAPIT, ELECSA or STROMA) or be inspected and certified separately. Always ask for the registration number before work begins.
Full house rewire prices
A full house rewire is the largest job most homeowners will commission from an electrician. UK 2026 prices: £3,500–£5,500 for a 2-bed home, £4,500–£6,500 for a 3-bed, and £6,500–£10,000 for a 4–5 bed property. Add £500–£1,500 if extensive plastering or floor lifting is required.
A rewire usually takes 5–10 days for a 3-bed home and includes new cabling throughout, a new consumer unit, all sockets and switches replaced, and Part P certification. Disruption is significant — most homeowners move out for the duration.
Signs you may need a rewire: rubber, lead or cloth-insulated cables, fuse box (not a modern consumer unit), round-pin sockets, recurring trip-outs, scorched or warm sockets. Properties last rewired before 1985 almost always need updating.
Fuse boards, EICRs and EV chargers
A modern consumer unit (fuse board) replacement costs £550–£950 fully fitted including RCDs, SPDs and Part P notification. This is one of the highest-impact safety upgrades on older properties.
An EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) costs £150–£350 depending on property size. EICRs are legally required for UK rental properties every 5 years and are strongly recommended for owner-occupiers buying or selling.
EV charger installs (7kW home wall-box) cost £800–£1,400 supplied and fitted. The OZEV grant ended for most homeowners in 2022 but is still available for flats and rental properties (£350 off).
How to choose a reliable UK electrician
Always check Part P registration on the NICEIC or NAPIT website using the engineer's number. Ask to see their public liability insurance certificate (£2m minimum) and verify they'll issue the appropriate certificate for the work.
Get at least three written quotes for any job over £500 and never pay the full balance upfront. A small materials deposit (10–25%) is normal; the balance should be due on completion and after you've received the certificate.
