Savings and payback

A 4kW system in the UK generates roughly 3,400 kWh a year. If you use about half of that in the home and export the rest, you save around £550 to £750 a year at 2026 prices.

That puts payback at roughly 9 to 12 years on a panels-only system. Add a battery and yearly savings rise to around £850 to £1,100, but payback stretches to 11 to 14 years because of the extra cost.

Assumptions: 27p per kWh import, 15p per kWh export under SEG, a south-facing unshaded roof, 50 percent self-consumption without a battery and 75 percent with one. Change any of those and the numbers move.

What affects your price

Roof direction matters more for output than cost. South facing is best; east or west loses roughly 15 percent of generation; north facing rarely pays.

Slate and flat roofs cost more to work on than plain tile. Two-storey homes almost always need scaffolding, which adds £500 to £1,000.

Batteries are the biggest single add-on. Only add one if you are home in the evenings or on a time-of-use tariff, otherwise the payback drags.

A 4kW system costs £5,500–£7,500 fitted in 2026. A 3kW system is £4,500–£6,000 and a 5–6kW system £7,000–£10,000. Scaffolding adds £500–£1,000 where it is needed.

A 5kWh battery adds £2,500–£4,000 and a 10kWh battery £4,500–£7,000 installed. It is worth it if you use most of your electricity in the evening or run an EV.

Around 9–12 years for panels alone and 11–14 years with a battery, based on 27p per kWh import and 15p per kWh export. Panels are usually warranted for 25 years.

Some low-income households qualify for funded solar under ECO4, which runs to 31 December 2026. Everyone else pays privately, though there is no VAT on domestic solar installations.
