What affects carpet cleaning prices in Bristol?
Bristol's hills, Clean Air Zone, parking zones and mix of Georgian, Victorian and new build homes all change what a cleaner charges.
The Clean Air Zone
Bristol's Clean Air Zone covers the city centre and harbourside, from Temple Meads to the Portway, plus parts of Hotwells and Bedminster. A cleaner with a non-compliant van pays £9 a day to work inside it. Most professional cleaners drive compliant vans, but ask if your home is inside the zone.
Steep streets and hillside terraces
Totterdown, Windmill Hill and Kingsdown are known for steep, narrow streets. Parking a van close to the door is hard, and hoses may have to run uphill or along a busy pavement. Cleaners often switch to a portable machine on these streets or allow extra time.
Residents' parking zones
Many central areas, including Clifton, Cotham and Redland, have residents' parking zones. Ask whether the cleaner needs a visitor permit, and have one ready so paid parking isn't added to the bill.
Georgian Clifton and multi floor townhouses
Clifton is full of tall Georgian townhouses, many split into flats over several floors. A single house can have three or more flights of stairs. If a cleaner charges per flight or per step, count them before you ask for quotes.
Student houses in Redland, Cotham and Bishopston
Shared houses near the University of Bristol and along the Gloucester Road often have five or more bedrooms and heavy foot traffic. A five bedroom house with a deep steam clean starts from £355, and heavily worn carpets can cost more.
New builds on the north fringe
Newer estates in Bradley Stoke, Stoke Gifford and Lyde Green usually have driveways, simple layouts and synthetic carpets. These are among the easiest homes to clean, with no parking or access problems.
VAT and minimum charges
VAT registered cleaners add 20%, while smaller traders under the £90,000 threshold don't charge VAT. Most cleaners also set a minimum charge per visit. Check both before comparing quotes.
From the trade: On hilly streets, getting the machine to the door is often harder than the clean itself. If a quote seems high for a small terrace in Totterdown or Kingsdown, ask whether access is the reason. A cleaner who works the area regularly will often bring a portable machine and quote less, because they know exactly what the street is like.
Which carpets cost more to clean?
Synthetic carpets are cleaned at the standard price. Wool, deep pile and natural fibres need more time or a different method.
Carpet type | What to expect | Price effect |
|---|---|---|
Polypropylene | Found in many new builds and lets, shrugs off most stains | Standard price |
Nylon | Hard wearing, rinses well with hot water | Standard price |
Polyester | Soft feel, but oily marks cling to it | Standard price, more pre treatment |
Wool | Common in Clifton flats, needs wool safe products and gentle drying | Some cleaners charge 10% to 20% more |
Berber loop | Loops can pull or fuzz under aggressive brushing | Standard price, softer approach |
Sisal and seagrass | Water causes shrinking and brown marks | Dry or low moisture method only |
Standard clean or deep steam clean?
A deep steam clean in Bristol costs about 50% more than a standard clean, starting from £254 for a three bedroom house with stairs instead of £169.
Method | Best for | Drying time |
|---|---|---|
Hot water extraction (deep steam) | Pet homes, long lets and carpets not cleaned for years | 4 to 8 hours |
Low moisture encapsulation | Offices, quick refreshes and damp basement flats | About an hour |
Dry compound cleaning | Sisal, seagrass and other water sensitive fibres | Almost immediate |
Bonnet cleaning | Light surface work in shops and offices | About an hour |
A standard clean suits carpets that are in fair condition and just need refreshing. Book the deep clean when the dirt is deep in the pile, there are pets, or a deposit depends on it.

Which stains come out?
Stain | Usual result |
|---|---|
Garden mud and everyday dirt | Comes out fully |
Coffee and tea | Fresh marks lift, older ones may leave a faint shadow |
Red wine | Fresh spills lift, set in stains may only fade |
Pet accidents | Usually treatable, unless they've soaked into the underlay |
Cooking grease | Usually removable with the right pre treatment |
Nail varnish | Sometimes removable, depending on the fibre |
Bleach and hair dye | Usually permanent |
How long does carpet cleaning take?
One room usually takes 20 to 30 minutes, and a three bedroom house with stairs takes about 2 to 3 hours. Upper floor flats in Clifton and homes on steep streets can take longer, because of the time spent moving equipment.
Hire a machine or book a professional?
A hire machine can handle a quick refresh of one or two rooms. For pets, stains, wool carpets and end of tenancy cleans, a professional does a far better job.
Professional machines pull out more dirt and leave less water behind. A carpet left wet by a hire machine dries slowly in Bristol's mild, damp weather and can shrink, brown or start to smell.
Clean or replace your carpet?
Clean the carpet if it's in sound condition and the problem is dirt, stains or smell. Consider replacing it if the backing is coming apart, the pile is crushed flat, there are large bleach marks, or pet urine has soaked through to the underlay. Cleaning costs much less than new carpet, so try it first.
What should a Bristol carpet cleaning quote include?
A fair quote lists every room and flight of stairs, names the cleaning method and gives one total including VAT. Avoid cleaners who won't give a fixed price before the day.
Check your quote includes:
Vacuuming before cleaning
Pre treatment of stains and walkways
Whether it's a standard or deep steam clean
How many flights of stairs and landings are included
Any Clean Air Zone charge or parking cost
Any minimum charge
The total price including VAT

How much is end of tenancy carpet cleaning in Bristol?
End of tenancy carpet cleaning in Bristol starts from £254 for a three bedroom house with a deep steam clean, and from £355 for a five bedroom student house. Heavily soiled carpets with pet stains start from £270 for a three bedroom house. A two bedroom flat starts from £95 for a standard clean.
Student tenancies near the universities mostly end in the summer, so book early if you're moving out in June or July.
Can a landlord make you pay for professional carpet cleaning?
No. Under the Tenant Fees Act 2019, landlords and letting agents in England cannot require you to pay for a professional clean. They can expect the carpets back as clean as they were at the start, allowing for fair wear and tear.
If the carpets are dirtier than when you moved in, the landlord can take a reasonable cleaning cost from your deposit. Normal wear in walkways is fair wear and tear. New stains are not. Keep your receipt and take dated photos once the carpets are dry.
If you rent in Chepstow or Newport, Welsh law applies instead, and fees for professional cleaning are banned there too.

When is the best time to book?
Spring and early autumn are the easiest times to book, with decent drying weather and more availability. Early summer fills up fast as student tenancies end. In winter, book a morning slot so the carpets have all day to dry.
How long do carpets take to dry?
Most carpets dry in 4 to 8 hours after a deep steam clean. Bristol's damp weather, wool carpets and basement flats in Clifton and Hotwells can make it take longer.
Open windows on a dry day, run a fan and keep internal doors open. In a basement flat, a dehumidifier helps the carpet dry faster.
How do you stay safe on cleaning day?
Take care on damp stairs, as wet carpet is slippery.
Keep children and pets off the carpet until it's fully dry.
Open windows while it dries, especially if anyone has asthma.
Ask which products are used if anyone has allergies or sensitive skin.
Put foil or plastic blocks under furniture legs to protect the damp carpet.
Watch for hoses across doorways, stairs and steep pavements.
Check the cleaner has public liability insurance.
How do you choose a carpet cleaner in Bristol?
Choose a cleaner who gives a fixed written price, names the cleaning method and holds public liability insurance. Membership of the National Carpet Cleaners Association (NCCA) is a good sign of proper training and insurance.
Get at least two quotes for the same rooms and stairs. A cleaner based near you will usually charge less than one crossing the city. Read recent reviews about stain removal, drying time and punctuality.
Bristol carpet cleaning questions
How much does it cost to clean one room in Bristol?
One room starts from £39 on our South West regional model. Most cleaners have a minimum charge, so booking several rooms together gives better value.
Is carpet cleaning cheaper in Bath than in Bristol?
No. Bath and Bristol share the same South West starting price, from £169 for a three bedroom house with stairs. Bath also has its own Clean Air Zone, which charges non-compliant vans £9 a day.
Is carpet cleaning cheaper across the bridge in Wales?
On our calculator, Chepstow and Newport are priced on the Wales model, from £80 for a three bedroom house with stairs. The Severn bridges are toll free, so a cleaner from Wales can cross without extra cost.
Will the Clean Air Zone add to my bill?
Only if you live inside the zone and the cleaner's van doesn't meet the emissions standard. In that case, some cleaners add the £9 daily charge.
How often should carpets be professionally cleaned?
Every 12 to 18 months for most homes, or every 6 to 12 months with pets or young children.
Is professional carpet cleaning worth it?
For stains, pets, wool carpets and move outs, yes. Professional machines remove more dirt and water than hire machines, so carpets dry faster and stay cleaner for longer.
