What affects carpet cleaning prices in Cardiff?
In Cardiff, student houses, event days at the stadium and the age of your home all change the price.
Student houses in Cathays
Cathays has one of the densest student populations in the UK, packed into Victorian terraces near Cardiff University. Many of these houses have five or six bedrooms and see heavy wear every year. That's why a five bedroom student house with a deep steam clean starts from £168, and heavily used carpets can cost more.
Victorian terraces in Roath, Canton and Splott
Long rows of Victorian terraces fill Roath, Canton, Splott and Grangetown. The rooms are modest and the stairs are usually one straight flight, which makes them quick to clean. Ask whether a knocked through lounge will be priced as one room or two.
Parking in inner Cardiff
Many inner areas, including Cathays, Roath and Canton, have permit parking and narrow terraced streets. A cleaner who can't park near your door has to run longer hoses or switch to a portable machine. Have a visitor permit ready if you can.
Event days at the Principality Stadium
On big match and concert days, roads around the city centre stadium close and traffic builds across Cardiff. If you live in the centre, Riverside or Pontcanna, avoid booking on an event day.
Cardiff Bay apartments
Apartment blocks in Cardiff Bay often have underground car parks with height barriers and secure entry. Tell the cleaner about the building when you ask for a quote, so they can bring the right machine.
Clean air rules
Cardiff has no charging Clean Air Zone, so cleaners' vans pay no daily emissions charge in the city.
VAT and minimum charges
VAT registered cleaners add 20%, while smaller traders under the £90,000 threshold don't charge VAT. Most cleaners also set a minimum charge per visit. Check both before comparing quotes.
From the trade: Student houses are where the condition setting matters most. Two five bedroom houses on the same Cathays street can be completely different jobs. One has been looked after, the other has a year of spilled drinks and muddy trainers. Be honest about the condition when you ask for a quote. A cleaner who arrives expecting a light clean and finds a heavy one will either charge more on the day or rush the job.
Which carpets cost more to clean?
Most synthetic carpets are priced the same. Natural fibres and thick piles take longer.
Carpet type | What to expect | Price effect |
|---|---|---|
Polypropylene | Common in rentals and student lets, resists most stains | Standard price |
Nylon | Durable and responds well to hot water extraction | Standard price |
Polyester | Soft but holds onto greasy marks | Standard price, extra pre treatment |
Wool | Needs wool safe products and slower drying | Some cleaners charge 10% to 20% more |
Berber loop | Loops can snag or fuzz if scrubbed too hard | Standard price, gentler cleaning |
Sisal and seagrass | Shrinks and marks when wet | Dry or low moisture method only |
Which cleaning method is right for your Cardiff home?
Hot water extraction suits most homes and is the best choice for student lets and pet homes. A deep steam clean starts from £120 for a three bedroom house with stairs, compared with £80 for a standard clean.
Method | Best for | Drying time |
|---|---|---|
Hot water extraction (deep steam) | Family homes, pet homes and move outs | 4 to 8 hours |
Low moisture encapsulation | Offices and quick refreshes | About an hour |
Dry compound cleaning | Natural fibres that can't get wet | Almost immediate |
Bonnet cleaning | Light surface cleaning in commercial spaces | About an hour |
Which stains can be removed?
Stain | Usual result |
|---|---|
Mud and everyday dirt | Comes out fully |
Spilled drinks, including beer and soft drinks | Usually comes out if treated before it sets |
Coffee and tea | Fresh marks lift. Old ones may leave a shadow. |
Red wine | Fresh spills lift. Old ones may only fade. |
Pet accidents | The stain and smell can usually be treated, unless it has soaked into the underlay |
Candle wax and grease | Usually removable with the right treatment |
Bleach, hair dye and dye transfer | Usually permanent |
How long does a carpet clean take?
Cleaning one room usually takes 20 to 30 minutes, and a three bedroom house with stairs takes about 2 to 3 hours. A five or six bedroom student house can take most of a day, especially if the carpets need heavy pre treatment.
Hire a machine or book a professional?
A hire machine is fine for a quick refresh of one or two rooms. For student move outs, pet stains and wool carpets, a professional gives a better result.
Professional machines are more powerful, so they pull out more dirt and leave less water behind. With a hire machine, carpets stay wet for longer, and over wetting can cause shrinking, browning or a damp smell.
Clean or replace your carpet?
Clean the carpet if it's in good shape and just dirty or stained. Think about replacing it if the backing is coming apart, the pile is worn flat, there are large bleach marks, or pet urine has soaked through to the underlay. A clean costs far less than new carpet, so it's worth trying first.
What should a Cardiff carpet cleaning quote include?
A fair quote lists every room, the cleaning method, the carpet condition and one total price with VAT. Avoid cleaners who won't give a fixed price before the day.
Check that your quote includes:
Vacuuming before cleaning
Pre treatment of stains and walkways
Whether it's a standard or deep steam clean
The condition the cleaner is pricing for
Whether stairs and landings are included
Any parking or access charge
The total price including VAT

How much is end of tenancy carpet cleaning in Cardiff?
End of tenancy carpet cleaning in Cardiff starts from £120 for a three bedroom house with a deep steam clean, and from £168 for a five bedroom student house. Heavily soiled carpets with pet stains start from £127 for a three bedroom house.
Most student contracts in Cathays end in the summer, so book a few weeks ahead if you're moving out in June or July.
Can a Welsh landlord make you pay for professional cleaning?
No. Since 2019, Welsh law has banned landlords and letting agents from charging fees for professional cleaning. Any term in your occupation contract that requires you to pay for one is void, and you don't have to pay it.
Your landlord can still claim a reasonable cleaning cost from your deposit if the carpets are left dirtier than when you moved in, but not for fair wear and tear. Keep your receipt if you book a cleaner, and take dated photos once the carpets are dry.

When is the best time to book?
Spring and early autumn are the easiest times, with good drying weather and more availability. Early summer gets busy as student contracts end, and event weekends in the city centre can slow cleaners down. In winter, book a morning slot so the carpets have all day to dry.
How long do carpets take to dry?
Most carpets dry in 4 to 8 hours after a deep steam clean. Wool carpets and damp winter weather can make it take longer.
Open windows on a dry day, use a fan, and keep internal doors open. In winter, keep the heating on low rather than closing the house up, as a damp room with no air flow can start to smell musty.
How do you stay safe on cleaning day?
Take care on damp stairs, as wet carpet is slippery.
Keep children and pets off the carpet until it's fully dry.
Open windows while it dries, especially if anyone has asthma.
Ask which products are used if anyone has allergies or sensitive skin.
Put foil or plastic blocks under furniture legs to protect the damp carpet.
Watch out for hoses across doorways and stairs.
Check the cleaner has public liability insurance.
How do you choose a carpet cleaner in Cardiff?
Choose a cleaner who gives a fixed written price, names the cleaning method and holds public liability insurance. Membership of the National Carpet Cleaners Association (NCCA) is a good sign of proper training and insurance.
